ALWAYS LIVE and The Boîte, in collaboration with Artistic Director Deb Lowah Clark and Choir Director Stella Savy, are very proud to present Boite Voices: Maiem - Songs of the Torres Strait Islands.

Boite Voices is a massed choir project involving singers from all over Victoria who will come together under the Artistic Direction of proud Meriam artist and educator Deb Lowah Clark with special guests to perform traditional and original songs of the Torres Strait Islands.

This very special event will feature songs in English, Meriam Mir and Kala Lagaw Ya, and is a rare opportunity to experience the culture and stories of the traditional peoples of Zenadth Kes, the Torres Strait Islands.

Maiem will be presented in two performances:

Venue: Melbourne Recital Centre
Date: Saturday 30 November
Time:  7:00pm - 8:15pm

Venue: The Goods Shed Terminus Theatre, Ballarat
Date: Sunday 1 December
Time: 2:30pm - 3:45pm

ARTISTS

Deborah Lowah Clark is a proud Meriam woman of the Torres Strait Islands. Born on Wadawurrung land, Deborah expresses the social justice issues of the Australian landscape through her music, in particular, giving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language and culture a space to be seen and heard. Deborah has performed in theatre, been MC for a variety of presentations honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories and is a current member of Sweet Mona's Choir that performs world and gospel songs.

Christine is a proud Torres Strait Islander and is one of Australia’s most popular recording artists and performers of all time who uses her voice and reputation to spread a message of unity and hope. With 17 ARIA nominations, including the APRA AMCOS award-winning My Island Home and her platinum album Stylin’ Up, she has one of the country’s most enduring and recognisable voices. 

Her acclaimed 27 year career spans across all forms of media including music, theatre, dance, film, television, radio, children’s entertainment, and one of the most influential keynote speakers. Her broad range of achievements include platinum selling solo albums, acting in Hollywood blockbusters such as Moulin Rouge and The Matrix - Reloaded, performing in the hit sell-out musicals Rent and Little Shop of Horrors, and featuring roles in high-profile TV shows The Alice and Outland. Over the years, Christine has been central to a number of memorable historic moments, with her performance of My Island Home at the Sydney 200 Olympics Closing Ceremony a notable standout. Many Australians consider Christine’s My Island Home as the unofficial Australian National Anthem. 

Anu is a prominent voice of multicultural Australia and in 2016 was appointed host of the Evenings ABC radio program and now presents her own national radio show on ABC Radio every Friday and Saturday. 
Christine recently released her 8th studio album after 20 years, titled Waku- Minaral A Minalay.
